Every October, in Saskatchewan, Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) is celebrated. During the month, individuals, employers, and other organizations seek to raise awareness of the many benefits of hiring those with disabilities. There are many benefits, including but not limited to individual, societal, and economic that come with diversifying the workplace.
Throughout October, many employers, those seeking jobs, and different organizations help those with disabilities transition into the workforce. The North Saskatchewan Independent Living Centre (NSILC) is involved with different supported employment initiatives, like employment counselling, resume building, and creating awareness among employers.
DEAM is a great time to educate about different disability employment issues from accessibility problems to fostering a more inclusive workforce. There are many ways you can help, including:
Make a flyer or poster
Write an article to raise awareness
Spread the word on social media
Hold meetings about disability issues
Take advantage of Disability Mentoring Day
Create a disability education program
No matter how you choose to help out, as an individual or organization, you will be helping to create a more inclusive workforce. Happy DEAM!
