Currently, there are no community gardens in Saskatoon designed with the intention of being fully accessible to individuals with disabilities and/or long-term health conditions. Attaching the garden to our Centre will establish an environment that is supportive, friendly and understanding. It will give many individuals the opportunity to garden who may not have a chance otherwise.

Community gardens have been linked to many wellness benefits including a reduction in loneliness and an increase in both physical and mental health. Produce from our garden will be offered to our members for free. As individuals with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty than Canadians without disabilities, this will help ensure our members have access to healthy and nutritious foods.

Why Help?

To get our accessible community garden started we will require a variety of garden basics. We would appreciate donations in the forms of:

  • Gift cards to Home and Garden centres

  • Money

  • New or gently used garden tools

  • Plants and seeds

  • Watering Cans

  • Rain Barrels

  • Fertilizer

NSILC has a small staff and we will require the help of volunteers to start our community garden and maintain it throughout the season. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Initial set-up including building garden boxes

  • Planting seeds and plants

  • Watering, weeding and tending to the garden

  • Leading community gardening workshops
