NSILC Home
We are committed to the Independent Living approach which recognizes the rights of citizens with disabilities to take control of their lives by examining choices, making decisions, and taking risks. When existing options do not provide an acceptable alternative, individuals are encouraged and assisted to seek their own solution.

NSILC is one of the 28 such centres across Canada that promotes the independence of people with disabilities. NSILC began in 1991 with a small reference group of Saskatoon people with disabilities. It is associated with Independent Living Canada (formerly CAILC, the Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres). The Centre was incorporated in April of 1995, and opened for business that October, with only an out of date computer and a tiny space in someone else's office.

From the beginning, the Centre has established itself as a single, convenient source of information for people with disabilities. Whether it is someone with multiple sclerosis looking for a support group, a paraplegic looking for a wheelchair, or someone looking for legal advice, the Centre directs people to the services they need. However, they do not act as an advocate for groups of people, nor do they take a stand on political issues.

NSILC expands and grows constantly to ensure that the services needed by the community are services we or someone else provides. We now have many programs and resources available and in the very near future we hope to be able to provide the community with a greater number of opportunities.
